Leadership Isn’t Just a Title

Cheers from NYC.

Earlier this month, our Mentor and Friend Frances Hesselbein celebrated her birthday…as she doesn’t like us to promote her age, let’s just say she’s been learning, growing and leading for nearly a century!

To celebrate, we’ll join her in her New York City office at 320 Park Avenue for a 45-minute Facebook Live conversation and Q&A session.

You can watch live starting at 2:30pm Eastern / 11:30am Pacific (or catch the recording) via my OR Jodi’s Facebook wall…

About Frances and the Hesselbein Institute… just because you haven’t heard of her yet doesn’t mean you can skip this post. I can give you just a few reasons you’d want to sit down with her - “knee to knee” as we will later today - and partake of the wisdom she so willingly shares.

10 Questions That Cause Momentum to Happen (Auto-magically)

Productive Momentum…

…greater than the sum of the parts

Once in a while you’re more productive than other days.

You know the feeling, it could be a Tuesday mid-morning or it could be a Saturday afternoon. You feel engaged, you are inspired, you believe in who you are and what you’re doing. And, you’re sharing that experience with colleagues, family members or other people really important to you.

Maybe you’re making incredible progress on that one work-event you’re planning for next quarter. Perhaps you realize you’re being 100% present with a loved one at home. Either way, you’re not just “doing,” you’re being…

…and that’s a special thing indeed.

Sure, you recognize that feeling of being productive, but do you know how to get going when you’re stuck?

There are 5 Stages of Momentum that we’ve identified, and questions that go along with each stage. As you move from one stage to the next, your commitment, confidence and skill-set grows to the point where you can create momentum “on call.” The 5 stages are:

  • Motivation: Identify why you want to do what you want to do.
  • Modeling: Identify a role model or existing example similar to your project.
  • Milestones: Identify specific routines and iterative outcomes to make progress.
  • Monitor: Identify your good habits and automate tasks.
  • Modify: Change your approach based on the achievements you make month-to-month.

Do you want to know how to Get Momentum and start the project that’s stuck?

We have discovered certain questions you must ask in a very specific order to set yourself up for more success.

There are 10 of them and you’ll need about 60 minutes next week to answer them all. Our suggestion is that you answer as many of them as possible in one sitting.

The 10 Questions

  1. When I am I at my best?
  2. What do I want to be known for?
  3. Who do I know who I can interview who has done something like this?
  4. What organization or group can I follow doing similar things to what I want to start?
  5. What routine do I need to create and habituate to stay on course with this project?
  6. What are the next three sub-projects to achieve over the next three months?
  7. What am I doing that is working really well?
  8. What can I automate or outsource to free up another 30 minutes every day?
  9. What part of the project outcome do I need to change or clarify?
  10. What part of my workflow do I need to change to work more efficiently?

Now What?

Schedule 60 minutes on your calendar for next Sunday morning. Sit down with your favorite beverage, open your notebook to a fresh page and then spend 5-6 minutes answering each one of those questions.

Your homework after you do THAT is: Schedule a meeting with a coach, a mentor or a best friend and share these 10 questions, and your answers, with them.

The goal of THAT meeting is simple: To clarify your commitment, ask them to help you by holding you accountable to achieving the answers you write.

You’ve had productive days in the past. Now it’s time to work in a way that puts those days at the forefront of your planning. Make an intentional plan to Get Momentum on that project is stuck.

Momentum and You

Ah, that feeling of momentum.

You know, when you get an idea, implement it, and it works! You get that blog post or chapter written. A customer leaves a raving review of your service online. The manufacturer you’re working with gets you what you need on time AND on budget. Isn’t that great?

We’ve just published a 34-page eBook that teaches you how 8 successful Get Momentum members create the conditions necessary to succeed at work…and in life.GMBookCover

Now, what do you do when things are NOT going that smoothly? What do you do when you face challenges, overwhelm and stress in life and at work?

How do you start…when you’re stuck?

That is what we study and teach at www.getmomentum.com.

Jodi - my wife, business partner, and co-author of “Get Momentum: How to Start When You’re Stuck” (Wiley, 2016) - and I have had the pleasure and honor of working with leaders like Devon Bandison for more than 19 years.

When Devon emailed me and said, “Hey Jason, how do we share the Get Momentum philosophy with more people worldwide?”

I knew we were on track to do something amazing together. Each person who contributed to this book is über-successful in our eyes. They are real people, people like you and I. They have a dream, a goal, an idea, a “something” that they need to get started.

These stories will catapult you to take action.

Now, it’s up to you to read this book, and that you Get Momentum. Welcome!

Do you ever think, “There’s something more…”

Do you pause to look at art?

I mean, do ever take a few moments to look at what’s been created out there and wonder…let your mind wander?

Do you ever think, “There’s something more for me to be making…”?

The reason I ask is threefold:

First, I found out last week that a dear friend of mine in Italy lost his father in a terrible work accident. I just can’t imagine. One day his dad is there, the next day…Gone. My thoughts, and prayers go out to him and his family.

Second, I read a quote attributed to Michelangelo recently, “The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it.” Is it time for you to reset what you’re aiming for, and hit a few of those goals?

Third, I’m listening to a book by Stephen King, and there’s a line in there that I’ve had to re-play about a dozen times:

“Stopping a piece of work just because it’s hard is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don’t feel like it…”

I’m in NYC this week, racing a triathlon next week, and traveling to Europe and the south of the United States in May. All along, I’m continuing to share this message of #Momentum.

Momentum: the impetus gained by a moving object”

Someone asked me yesterday if I’m an artist.

I thought about it for just a moment and replied, “My art is in words and action…

I hope you’ll read, hear and say some words today.

And most of all, I hope you’ll take some action.

When You Find It, Hold On To It (#Momentum)

Can you imagine where you’ll be in 12 months?

Look, I know it’s a long time to think about now that I’m “in my mid-40’s,” it’s dawning on me that time IS going faster and faster. My grandpa was right…again.

Surprise. Tragedy. Opportunity. Work. And life…

These are the things that get in the way of us achieving (and living) #Momentum.

But, you knew that.

What I have learned over the past few years (ok, some of these took me a lot longer than just a decade!):

I can’t do it all.
I can’t do it all now.
I can’t do it all by myself.
Tell me…what do you think, when you see those three bullet points?

One of the things we talk about often in the Get Momentum 1:1 coaching calls is all the places that we can apply the “Concept Of Momentum” to achieve more, to worry less, and to experience a better life. This approach will affect an incredibly networked environment, yo’ll e able to see just how all of this comes together as you think about the next 8,760 hours (*that’s 365 days…) and how it ALL will change, if ever so slightly.

Take out a piece of paper, set a timer for 15 minutes and think about how things will be in 12 months for:

You.
Your family.
Your community.
Your co-workers and clients.
Wondering what to write?

Keep it easy, keep it real.

Just come up with 2 hopes, 3 dreams, 4 expectations, and 5 worries that each of those “bullet points” will have over the next year. If you ONLY did that, I can all but guarentee that you’d have a laser-like focus on what needs to get your attention today; and, what you most likely will need to ignore going forward *(at least for a little while, as you tidy up some of the “messes” that need your attention).

I know I hid the power of what I just wrote, so let me turn it in to TWO questions for you…

1) are you absolutely clear that what your focusing on now will make a difference?

2) do you have the “outside counsel” you need to identify what to ignore this year?

Let’s just assume that what you’re doing with your life is important; it is, right? You’re going to have to “steward” your resources carefully. By resources I’m talkin’ (at the minimum) your:

  • Time
  • Energy
  • Focus
  • Money
  • Community

What’s easy? To sit down, and make a list of what needs to be done. You can do that in a daydream. Alternatively, what is much more difficult difficult? To understand the absolute responsibility that “Choice” affords those who have it…

The Value of Choice

Choice may actually be your MOST valuable asset; the ability to choose to do “This” and “Not do That.”

If you have the ability to choose what to focus on next, you have one of the gretest powers on earth.

I dare you to clarify: “What are you trying to finish?” I mean in absolute terms, “What is the thing you want to get done?” Now, where are you along the contiuum of progress on/with that thing?

We use the word #Momentum every day in our Get Momentum coaching program. (Makes sense, doesn’t it?)

We define momentum as:

  1. The impetus for action,
  2. the coaching to continue through the tough times,
  3. and the community that will celebrate with you
  4. as you move from milestone to milestone, making the world a better place as you figure out what it is you can do to “Make Things Better.”

That’s it, 4 steps. Take one out, and you’re going to start wasting. You’ll lose time, get distraced, feel frustrated, and quite frankly the universe will stack itself against you.

Do yourself a favor, for 24 hours make a conscious and VERY deliberate decision about will get done next. Focus, and then refocus, on the thing you know will make the difference by the end of this week, this month, this year.

12 months from now - those 8,760 hours will have gone by, whether you want them to slow down or speed up - you will be where you are based on what you focus on next…and then next after that, and then next after that…

For as long as you’ve been alive, and for the forseeable future as I can see it, there WILL be TOO MUCH to do. That “increasing mound of ambition” needs to be studied, sliced, diced, unpack, and reshaped in to a plan that you’re proud of, you’re a part of, and you’re willing to hold yourself accountable to see through to the next goal line.

We need you…

We need you to make real, concerted, valuable, meaningful progress. And, when I say we I mean all of us.

Even the people you haven’t met yet that will be better off because you have the time, the energy, the focus and you’re making the maximum use of the (*limited) resources you have to make thigns as good as you can make them.

Momentum is your tool to identifying, definining, working on, and actualizing your ambition.

How to say “Good Job” - a social experiment

Chances are, you know someone who has earned a promotion recently. In fact, I dare you to find out. Post a tweet, check Facebook, make a few phone calls, email a friend from college…Or, simply sign in to your LinkedIn account.

In this short video, I show you how I do it; how I recognize those who’ve earned a promotion, and I offer to take them and their friends out for a coffee (or tea). I’ve been running this social experiment for a few months now, and am in awe at the response…

So, if you’ve earned a promotion, let me know (click the “Contact” menu option above). And, when you find out someone you know has earned a promotion, connect them to say congratulations…

With just 45 days left in 2014, the proverbial “Countdown” is on.

Your Weekend Homework

I’m writing this for you all as I look out my NYC hotel window and see the reflection of my building in the windows of the Freedom Tower. Create a loyal cadre, mentor the up-and-comers

Good morning from Ojai!

So, today is “Town Hall” day here at Get Momentum HQ. From 9-10:30AM, Jodi and I presented on this month’s theme -

You: The Influential Leader (non-members, click here to find out more)

During that presentation, I shared the getAbstract Website landing page that has a “knowledge pack” of book summaries you can read. Imagine, in less than 30 minutes, you could pull in ideas from 4 different books all about how to improve the way you go about the mentor/mentee relationship process. (Oh, by the way, Get Momentum members receive a 90-day free subscription to getAbstract - that right there is worth $90.00)

Members who’d like to access that Knowledge Pack of books, just click here

(I mentioned today is Town Hall day… There’s ANOTHER webinar scheduled to begin in about an hour, over at www.WillYouMentor.me … you’re invited!)

Mentors: Do you ask these 3 questions?

Recently I shared a newsletter with the www.WomackCompany.com community, outlining the three most important questions a mentor can ask their mentee, or a mentee can prepare to ask their mentor.

Are you regularly meeting with the mentor?

One of the easiest ways to move from where you are, to where you want to be, is to surround yourself by people who are moving in that direction - someone you can learn from, that is what I call a mentor. Not that they will give you every step to take in a checklist form, but being able to sit down with someone who has forged the path ahead of you will allow you the opportunity to throw questions on the table, and listen to stories and return.

Over the past decade or more, I have been able to align myself with mentors in both my personal and my professional lives. I can say that my business has grown, and my marriage is more successful, because of spending time with people successful in those two areas. For example, before Jody and I got married, and this is going back more than 15 years, we made a commitment to each other that we were going to spend up to seven dinners going out with successful, happily married couples.

In all transparency, finding that many people who were both successful in their professional lives, and happy with their personal lives, proved to be quite a challenge. Now, we did it, and as a result we have information and stories to look back on as we look to our future. Okay enough about personal examples, here are those three questions I wrote about for entrepreneur magazine a while back. I will list the questions here, and you can read the full article by clicking here.

The Three Questions to Ask

1. What is one specific goal for the next 6 months?

2. What exactly do you feel is in your way of achieving it?

3. What is the very specific help you need to achieve that goal?
