What’s your plan for 2016?

As you consider the things you’re going to start, as well as what “they” are going to ask you to do, what do you think will make the difference as you move through a 366 day year?

Sure, there’s more to know than you can schedule and a certain amount of what’s going to happen is un-fore-seeable. Nonetheless, how are you approaching what it is that you’ll need to get done?

What’s Your Gratitude Plan

I believe with all my heart that within a few years medical facilities, communities, and even political groups are going to gain an understanding of the power of gratitude.

What would happen - do you think - if the people around you were more grateful and acknowledged more of the good that goes on?

Would our world be better?

For more than a decade, I’ve stopped at the end of each day to write in my journal. There are three prompts I respond to, and here’s the third one:

“What am I grateful for today?”

Can you remember their name? (The most important sound in ANY language.)

Who are you around? And, who’s around you?

Above is a screenshot of just a few of the Get Momentum members who have joined our online discussion forum. Looking through all the people there, I’m reminded of a story from a while ago…

A Spring Day in Colorado

Years ago I presented a seminar in Boulder, CO. On the lunch break I walked across the street to get a sandwich and on the way back, I saw someone who was in a seminar with me previous time I was working for the client.

“Hi,” I said, and called them by name.

He looked at me, surprised, then he said. “Oh, you’re back!” He had attended a seminar I delivered the year before, and I had remembered on a break we talked about desk organization and the local ski scene!

After we chatted for just a few minutes, I excused myself to head back to the room. At that point he said, “I have to ask. I don’t remember your name, even though I was in your class last year. How on earth did you remember my name?”

I’m convinced that most of the time people are moving so fast, they forget to notice the little things. The thing is someone’s name is perhaps the BIGGEST thing there is! The more we can notice (and do) the little things, it makes it easier to perform while doing the bigger things.

For example, next time you meet someone, actually slow down to…well…meet them!

Get their name.

Tell your brain that this deserves your attention…that the information coming in is very important. Dale Carnegie said that each person’s name is the best sound they can hear!

If you want to remember something (and this goes beyond just remembering someone’s name!), slow down. Make it important. Stop to ask them a question, and as they respond, really listen.

Connect their name with them…the person, not just the activity of meeting, greeting, and moving on.

You don’t need more time; you need to focus on more important things

Let me describe a pretty typical scenario…

Let’s say you’re meeting a colleague for coffee, and she sends you a text message saying she’s running 15 minutes late.

If you knew that an hour ago, you’d have spent that extra time reviewing a document at your desk.

But, sitting here in a conference room, you wonder what you could do while you’re waiting.

What would you do?

  • Check email on your phone?
  • Flip through Instagram?
  • Update Facebook?
  • Do nothing? Get upset?

HERE’S A BETTER IDEA:

15 minutes is about 1% of your day.

Finding these extra 1%’s throughout your day is crucial to increasing your productivity and gaining momentum. CLICK to tweet.

In my experience working with clients, they admit they lose roughly 5% of their day because they’re not ready for these free 15-minute windows that pop up throughout their day.

That’s why I made this video. It’s short. It’s less than 3 minutes. And it’s got a few ideas to help:

It’ll take less than 1% of your day and will EASILY give you a 10x return in time and productivity.
