Was it “easy” for them? And is it only “hard” for me???

For two more days, Jodi and I are coaching Get Momentum members around the world in the leadership skill called #resilience …

SO, late at night I looked at the bookcase behind me in the office, I found myself wondering, “Were they all successful? Did it work out for them all as easy as I might think it did?”

So, I did a little research.

I found this article about an author who I’ve paid a lot to read her books…

It’s some of the story about J.K. Rowling; and, the line that JUMPED off the computer screen (the third monitor, off to the right) were these:

“A few days later Rowling received a letter asking for the remainder of the manuscript. The agency sent Rowling’s 200-page script to 12 publishers, all of whom, to their eternal regret, turned down the book. Harper Collins showed interest but was too slow in formulating a bid…”

Of course, I went and looked up the Google answer to this query: “J. K. Rowling net worth” and here’s an answer I found: “Harry Potter is now a global brand worth an estimated US$15 billion”

Look, you may not think (or you might) that a writer “should” make that much money; that’s not the point. What I’m curious about are YOUR answers to the prompts here; that is, would you have bounced back after 12 - yes T W E L V E - rejection letters?

But “Why?” do you want to be more productive?

ahhhh, Sunday routines…

(What is one of YOUR Sunday routines? Click below to add yours in the comments section.)

Every Sunday, I jump over to Amazon.com and read through what people have said after reading “Your Best Just Got Better.”

Currently, there are 184 reviewers who have given the book 5 out of 5 stars.

Lainee & Judson Stidham wrote, “Jason spoke to the core when he described optimizing your productivity so we could make more time for life. We were all in!”

George Walmsleyon said, “I was one of those people that always used the excuse, I don’t have enough time. After reading Jason Womack’s book, Your Best Just Got Better, I have never used that excuse again!”

And, Russ P. Schroeder added, “I am almost done reading this book by Jason Womack. I think it gives one a very fresh and broader perspective on what I feel is the somewhat out dated time management mindset. Jason talks about life management and getting stuff done. I have found his approach very effective for not only my work but my life in all areas.”

Why Do You Want to Be More Productive?

This is perhaps the most important question to ask. Everyone has their own answer, their own reason to want to get more done here, so they have more time and freedom there. Now, where is YOUR “here,” and what would YOU like to be doing “there?”

How Do You Plan More Productively?

Take a look at the next 5 days on your calendar, and match what you have planed to the suggestions below…

“…a life of no variety.” Is THAT what you think it is?

At mile 47 of our 53-mile ride on June 22nd (80% of which was uphill), I had some serious momentum. As I passed a guy riding a Specialized bicycle, he made a comment about my calves. (Yeah, I know, weird…)

Well, I slowed down enough to ride side-by-side with him and said, “Every morning in the shower I do 40 toe-raises. I think it helps.”

His reply was telling, “Wow, you’re really disciplined.”

Now, I should have just left it at that…but I didn’t; I couldn’t.

“I once worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. I spent an extra day there, walking around and reading about the scientists who lived and worked there through the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. One of the things they competed on was just how much they could in without having to think about it. It was the early days of ‘computing’ mathematics.”

His next reply should have shut me up…But, I had the endorphins, momentum and the attitude of climbing a long hill in the Sierras!

“Wow, that would be a life of no variety.”

I felt my heart rate increase. Did he really reply that way?

“In the short term, maybe. But, it freed their mind to do innovative thinking that no one else had time to do before.”

Silence. Then, he kinda dropped back a little bit. I suppose he lost momentum. I didn’t ride with him again that day.

What don’t you want to have to think about?

What is it you’re not willing to look at? If success in your future comes down to what you’re working on today, tell me:

What’s getting in the way of you working on the most important things?

I’ll propose that a MAIN reason you don’t have time to work on yourMOST Important Things is that you haven’t given up on all the little things you could drop with no net negative effect on your life.

Does this sound familiar?

“You’re frustrated at the end of most days because you and your team isn’t getting enough done.”

I propose you’re losing momentum because you and your team lack discipline; there is a list of reasons for this:

  • They second-guess their direction
  • They put off achieving milestones until the last minute
  • They consistently seek information they don’t have
  • They aren’t 100% clear on the destination

If any of this rings true, click the contact menu-bar option, let’s talk about enrolling them all in Get Momentum for a year. Things will get better. You have my word.

“What if” you could communicate more clearly?

Last week, 5 Get Momentum members met during our #Virtual #CoffeeChat. We discussed the Three Kinds of Conversations I talk about in the book Your Best Just Got Better.

(Click here for a PDF that explains them in detail…)

Over an hour, we talked about:

  • The power of a small business owner creating a “Standard Operating Procedures” manual to save time AND money.
  • The need of a senior manager to manage the number of times HE interrupts his team during the day.
  • The impact (on a marriage) of a serial entrepreneur NOT asking his wife “pop-quiz” questions about the “transactions” of life when she’s away from the information she would need to answer his questions.

What are you waiting for?

During the #Virtual #CoffeeChat, I promised I’d send this guide to #Better conversations. You see, if you talk to people, and if you want to continue talking to them in a way that builds, you’re going to want to read this guide. Here’s what I know…

There are THREE Kinds of Conversations you’re going to have with people each day. Also, when you ARE speaking, there are THREE things that people are waiting to hear from you.

Click here to find out what they are!

Prepare to take the vacation of your life.

Happy Summertime to YOU!

I have good news… and then some bad news. Are you ready?

Good news: Summertime means vacation time.

Bad news. According to a recent survey*, most people who took a vacation didn’t unplug while away.

In fact, 25% said they worked every day.

In the past month, Jodi and I have taken 8 days of vacation, 5 of which we did NO work at all. We didn’t make a single call or send even one email. We didn’t work on the website, or write an article. We did no work. We hiked in Ojai, biked in Lake Tahoe and kayaked through the roaring rapids of the Rogue River in Oregon. (I included a picture of the last rapid.)

How did we do it?

We addressed THREE important issues.

“Do you have a vacation coming up?”

I challenge you to spend 10-minutes on each of the three issues I’ll tell you about. With just 30-minutes of planning, you could have the best vacation of your life!

Resilience Is Our Theme This Month

Think about the word “Resilient.” That’s the the theme this month at www.getmomentum.com. Can you remember a time when you faced a huge challenge and had to fight your way back to health or wellness? That’s BIG resilience.

There’s another kind of resilience, as well. I’m teaching people about the “everyday kind” of resilience. You need this.

Three Issues

If you’re about to take time off of work, here are three conversations you can have that will build resilience before you need it. Also, they will give you “peace of mind” while you’re away from the office:

(1) Discuss your MITs (Most Important Things) that need to be done BEFORE you leave,

(2) Agree on your MITs (Most Important Things) for the time you’re on vacation, and

(3) Schedule 2 afternoon “catch-up days” for the week after you return.

In order to take those 8 days off, Jodi and I addressed all three. I promise, you’ll have a better vacation if you do this.

An Offer

Want to talk about your upcoming vacation with one of us? Join Get Momentum today, and we’ll schedule a 30-minute coaching call as a bonus to your July Membership.

Momentum and You

Ah, that feeling of momentum.

You know, when you get an idea, implement it, and it works! You get that blog post or chapter written. A customer leaves a raving review of your service online. The manufacturer you’re working with gets you what you need on time AND on budget. Isn’t that great?

We’ve just published a 34-page eBook that teaches you how 8 successful Get Momentum members create the conditions necessary to succeed at work…and in life.GMBookCover

Now, what do you do when things are NOT going that smoothly? What do you do when you face challenges, overwhelm and stress in life and at work?

How do you start…when you’re stuck?

That is what we study and teach at www.getmomentum.com.

Jodi - my wife, business partner, and co-author of “Get Momentum: How to Start When You’re Stuck” (Wiley, 2016) - and I have had the pleasure and honor of working with leaders like Devon Bandison for more than 19 years.

When Devon emailed me and said, “Hey Jason, how do we share the Get Momentum philosophy with more people worldwide?”

I knew we were on track to do something amazing together. Each person who contributed to this book is über-successful in our eyes. They are real people, people like you and I. They have a dream, a goal, an idea, a “something” that they need to get started.

These stories will catapult you to take action.

Now, it’s up to you to read this book, and that you Get Momentum. Welcome!

Understand and THEN motivate

Think about the next 6 months. Where will you be by the end of this year? What is it going to take to make a difference to your organization and/or to your community? I’ll propose it’s one (or more) of these three things:

  1. Creativity.
  2. Innovation.
  3. Productivity.

Please use these words more. The people around you will appreciate it.

Look, I’m not writing this motivate you. I do want to get your mind going.

Ok, ready?

Think of someone who is difficult to work with. Now, make a list of WHY it’s difficult to work with that person. Once you have that list, you can start to make a plan.

Different = Diverse = Innovative

Is your organization in a place to be more innovative?

Think about the next 6 months, and ask, “Where will we find new customers?” Or, “What can we do to motivate our current customers?” Of course, you may need to motivate more than just customers; you may need to connect with your staff, vendors, or other community leaders.

Engaged leaders need to be more innovative. They need to create products and services that prove they understand how to motivate people to take action.
