What do the two words “High” & “Performance” mean… Really?

When you put those two words together…

You’re in a position to succeed, to achieve High Performance at work and in life. Now, when it’s time to Get the Right Things Done (thanks to a teacher of mine, Peter Drucker for framing the “ultimate” definition of productivity), are you set up to succeed?

This month, GET MOMENTUM members from around the world are studying one particular topic related to Workplace Performance and Personal Productivity.

Success, selfish, self-aware…

…each one of those words can get us going, working toward some “end in mind.” GET MOMENTUM members watched a video clip when a news anchor asked me to explain how I thought the “secret to success…is being more selfish?”

It’s a good one. The prompt for this article came after the executive producer of FOX Business news in New York City found the article I wrote for Entrepreneur.com titled, “Your Secret to Success? Be More Selfish” and asked me to talk about it for the Los Angeles studio!

Today, I’m offering up a 15-minute “Town Hall” titled:

A 3-Part Process to Achieving More (at work AND in life)

  1. Clearly state a specific goal you’d like to achieve in 8-12 months.
  2. List a minimum of 7 people who could help you get there.

…and, to find out what step 3 is, just click here!

How could a magazine create MOMENTUM?

Some of you may know that I write articles - as regularly as I can - for Entrepreneur Magazine‘s website. (Link here.)

Well, just today, I found out that they are running a special on subscriptions, so I decided to run my own special. I’m offering to buy 15 people (in the United States) a subscription to the magazine. Just visit this page for all the details.

Want to grow faster? Surround yourself with the people moving in that direction! One way to create MOMENTUM in life and at work is to surround yourself with ideas and activities that make it more likely you’ll grow in a positive direction. Subscribing to this magazine makes it possible and much more likely you’ll do so!

Chapter 1, Your Best Just Got Better

If you want to be more productive tomorrow, there is just one thing to know. No long to do list, no complex system to download, no “doomed-from-the-start” routine you won’t keep after the first weekend.

This one thing may surprise you.

I’m not going to say get your inbox to zero. You don’t need to unplug from your devices or set an out-of-office message telling people “I only check email at 10 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.”

You need to know is when you’re at your best. I’m not talking about the time of day here; what you want to know: Your “conditions for greatness.” Did you know that your productive day tomorrow actually begins…right now? Of course, “old” time management techniques would have you make a to-do list, or reprioritize your most important things for the day. But I’m going to take a 21st century approach.

Your “productive” day doesn’t really start when the alarm clock rings (or, your mobile device lights up) and you jolt into wake mode.

How much you get done as you go through that day will have to do with how you’ve been, what you’ve done, where you’ve gone and even who you’ve spent time with over the past 18-24 hours.

At any given moment, the race is on to be and do your best. Every day of the week (and, as someone interested in productivity, that means Saturday and Sunday too!) gives you the opportunity to repeat and strengthen the habits you have to get things done. What are some of your habits?

Do you know, I mean really know, when you’re at your best?

Okay, stop. There you go again, bringing the 1990’s in to the discussion. Please don’t tell me you thought, “I’m a morning person.” Or, “I work best at night after the phone stops ringing/emails stop pouring in.”

I’m not talking about THAT when; I want you to think about what it would take for you to be at your very best. I want to know what the “conditions” are that make it possible for you to give all you’ve got to what you’re going to do. Take time right now and ask yourself, “When am I at my best?”

I’ll share some of my own with you here. If these make sense to you, great. If you need to modify and make them your own, please do so.

  • I am at my best when I eat a complete and balanced breakfast.
  • I am at my best when I say thank you to someone who helped me that week.
  • I am at my best when I ask for help right before I get frustrated or stressed out.
  • I am at my best when I exercise at least 45 minutes, 4 days a week.

All done? Great. Remember when I said that your productive day tomorrow ACTUALLY starts today? Review your list of 8 or even 10 “At my best when…” statements, and set yourself up to review and experience them as you head into the next 24 hours.
